Thisworldisyours was written about the Universe and the odd ways it listens! A casual manifestation tune. It was recorded using all hardware synths. Mainly Roland’s JX-8P with funky interjections by Yamaha’s DX7. The drums and percussion were recorded in an unfinished basement and then turned into programmable “One Shots”.
The writing process of this tune was quick and dirty. This was a two-hour demo that unintentionally became the master! It was inspired by an appreciation for Bee Gees’ “Staying Alive”. I love the way that song made me feel. I have nostalgia linked to it… it’s been the backdrop of many fun moments. My bandmate Daniel and I were talking about needing our own “Staying Alive”. I looked up the BPM, entered it on the metronome, and laid that bassline down on the DX7.
The bass is just a loop that, halfway through the song, accidentally got turned around. The rest of the instrumentation is just sparkles and fun moments that happen at different times, but live together nicely.
The vocals were the last addition. I had just gotten back from a 15-hour car ride with my friend Colin, where we listened to of Montreal’s entire discography (almost). I liked the way their vocal intervals sat, and wanted to give it a try. Gene Harris’s Losalamitoslatinfunklovesong inspired the title as well as a quick lyric I tagged in the tune. He has been widely influential to my synth playing these past few years, and I wanted to pay homage to him. The way all these synths interact with each other is inspired by Zapp and Parliament, the two synth groups that I learned my early playing from. I’m obsessed with their approach to synthesis. They have truly perfected synth composition in a band setting.
