Why Not Destroy This?
Why Not Destroy This? marks a new chapter in the evolution of ViRG. While prior releases were, for all intents, fully solo projects, Why Not Destroy This? is the recorded debut of ViRG the band.
In addition to Piano Whitman, the record features synthesists Alex Salser (also of D.C. luminaries Oh He Dead) and Daniel Rozmajzl (Pleasure Business), and drummer and percussionist Maxfield Holiday (Pleasure Business).
“It’s been a really magical experience” says Whitman. “I wrote with Alex, I wrote with Maxfield. I did a writing session with Eric Palmquist, our mixing engineer. Jim James and I wrote “Lost in You’ together”.
ViRG does not use soft synths from computer programs, so Whitman works within her synthesizers to chase down sounds amidst the oscillators and envelopes, and then they track. “Because nothing is digital in any way,” explains Whitman, “we're capturing performances the same way you would capture an acoustic instrument. What people play is what goes on the record. What you hear is the take.”
Thematically, Why Not Destroy This? is, at its deepest, a record about human connection; and a lamentation about how those connections fray further every day. “The world is rapidly changing and being bought up by these big corporations and industries,” she says. “The mind-control and
numbing of it all, it just makes me want to fight back.” Though she is an admitted synthesizer obsessive, she has a deep disdain for Artificial Intelligence. “I recently learned there are 380 data centers right next to our house. There’s a phenomenon where priests bless data centers -
it's a real thing!” And thus, was born the track “Data Center Exorcist”.
The synthesizer was conceived initially as a way to emulate other “real” instruments. Soon though, humans’ innate curiosity brought about a sonic revolution. It is in that collaborative relationship that magic was born. “I have this very deep emotional human attachment to these
machines” says ViRG. “I find that, other than voice, they are the best way that I can express myself. You make the decisions. It's you who turns the knob or adjusts the envelope.”
And so, we have Why Not Destroy This? A record of dualities that rails against everything from data centers to deceptive paramours, while also celebrating self-determination, real love, and
liberation of all ilk’s. “A lot of this record is about this thought of: why not destroy this?” Whitman says. “It could be like a personal relationship, or a path that you're going down in life, or artificial intelligence. It’s about curiosity and change.”

On The Vine
It’s a long-awaited evening
Just me and you tonight
Greet me by the stairs
Put your arms round mine
Moonlight smiling
Sparkle in your eye
Finally together
I can relax my mind
Bring it up
You wanna do me your way
So bring it on up
Would you like me to stay?
Could this be love?
On the vine
Your lips are red
When pressed to mine
Could this be love?
On the vine
Your kisses sweet
My valentine
Can you feel the vibrations thru the wall?
Can you hold the energy for it all?
Bring it up
You wanna do me your way
So bring it on up
Would you like me to stay?
Could this be love?
On the vine
Your lips are red
When pressed to mine
Could this be love?
On the vine
Your kisses sweet
My valentine

Lost In You
I can see myself getting lost in you
No kind of alarm was my avenue
Oh, Could you see yourself born again with me?
Take a chance, honey
Level with me
Don't you want to be free?
I could see myself getting lost in you
Takes less and less for me to fall, fall right thru
Oh, and I can be so damn naive
To think that I'm the only one in your bed
Well maybe that's just what I need
Lost in you
Lost in you
Lost in you
Lost in you
I am already so lost in you
You set the clock that ticks me true
Oh, I can feel my hand on the pulse of the universe
I wanna take a chance, honey
I want to be free
Here I recognize
Who you are in my world
Here I recognize
Who you are in my world
I can see myself so lost in you, lost in you
Shattering the myth
Living in the true now
Oh, in real harmony
The only song in our heads
Don't you know it's just what we needed?
I could see myself getting lost in you
I can see myself getting lost in you

Paper Stars
Someone told her there is a tower
Where electro waves spin out
If you’re hungry, you can use the power
Of a psycho driven three time total knockout
You wanna live
In your dream again
She’s just a kid
Folding paper stars
You wanted in
Here’s your dream again
She’s still a kid
Folding paper stars
Television
Television
Oooo there’s a burning desire to keep that tele on
You wanna live
In your dream again
You wanna live
Folding paper stars
You wanted in
Here’s your dream again
You wanna live
Folding paper stars
You found a huge
Irreversible code
They will haunt you
They’ll own you
Until you get old
You wanna live!
In that dream again
You wanna live!

Coward
Look me in the eye, you coward.
Do you regret, do you regret?
Look me in the eye, you coward
You were a friend
Everyone’s friend
Look me in the eye, you coward
Do you forget?
They don’t forget
Hands over hands
You vs me
Boy vs girl
Man vs law
Me vs me
Who do I tell?
Who do I tell?
Who did you tell?
Who did you tell?
Guess I am alive, you viper!
Under your bed
Around your neck
Look who’s come around
You loser
I don’t forgive
I won't forget
Hands over hands
You vs me
Boy vs girl
Man vs law
Me vs me

Like A Woman
You touch yourself in the middle of the night
Flirting in the mirror, on your side
And you feel
Oh you feel
Like a woman
The tr808 bumps and chimes
In a pitch-black room with the glitter on your thighs
And you feel
Oh you feel
Like a woman
Oh you don’t fit in
You’re the biggest in the room
Hurt your head on the ceiling
And your feet in the shoes
And you feel like a woman
You got hair on hair
And the greenest eyes
Its electric
Its a pay the price
To feel
To feel
To feel
And you have to ask yourself
Do you believe in something else?
Show em what you want but don’t give your heart away
Lookin for some loving not everyone can play
Its a hot night out you know just who you are
Oh to feel like a woman out to have some fun
Looking back
At night time
Intoxicated loving
After dark
Alone you’ll find yourself
Running from something
Out there you’re tearing it down
Girl watching your back when fooling around
To live
To be
Like a woman
And you have to ask yourself
Do you believe in something else?
Show em what you want but don’t give your heart away
Lookin for some loving not everyone can play
It's a hot night out, you know just who you are
Oh to feel like a woman out to have some fun

Data Center Exorcist
Just the person to check
What’s living in this internet
Touring the freezing machines
Numeric patterns are breaking off breaking off
This needs something more
Blessing computer screens
Protect the mother’s programming
Dressed up in sundays best
For data center excorcist
Information highway posses the lines
Ceremony on the colo floor
Passing thru the biometric door
Malicious twist of wires
This system failure must corrupt and destroy
Sanctify technology
Blessing computer screens
Protect the mother’s programming
Dressed up in sundays best
For data center excorcist

Order to kill the machine

Cyber Girl
What can I help with?
Are you a lonely one?
Oh I could make you feel just let me in
But it’s a weird situation
With a catch at the top
I’ll open up your mind come let me in
You know I always can be found
Lighting up your face
While putting me down
Baby you get sooo lonely come back around
I’m your cyber girl
Shelter from the world
Love ain’t takin two I’m fading into you
Open up your mouth
Hold it in the clouds
Ain’t nothing you can do I’m fading into you
You’ve got a one track mind
No need to take our time
The more I know the faster we can play
But there’s a whole lot of violence
In your romantic world
Just stay inside with me you’ll be okay
I hear you moving to my sound
Never far away
Don’t turn me down
Baby you get sooo lonely come back around
I’m your cyber girl
Shelter from the world
Love ain’t takin two I’m fading into you
Open up your mouth
Hold it in the clouds
Ain’t nothing you can do I’m fading into you

Criminal Record
I’ve stolen drinks from the fridge
Downtown at the 7-11
I got a couple speeding ticks
5 4 maybe even 17
But my love I thought you loved me for me
Raised a little wagged child
Ran around playing “Cops and robbers”
Got tattooed, cut my hair and all
Also thought I’d be gorgeous and tall
So uncomfortable in my own skin
Still bored on the weekend
My home town bought by big business
I thought why not destroy this?
You found my criminal record
What does this mean for us?
So you found my criminal record
Some folks are born to die
Some folks are born to thrive
I was born with intrusive thoughts
I won’t hold a 9 to 5
I can’t stop stealing shit
Get black out drunk and forget
I was a mall rat at heart
Now I can’t be security guard because -
You found my criminal record
What does this mean for us?
So you found my criminal record
What does this mean for us?
So you found my criminal record
What does this mean for us?
You found my criminal record

It’s Over Now
It’s over now
I smell fire in the air
It’s over over now
I can feel it everywhere
It’s over over over now
Exhausted by the space
It’s over now
When the house lights all come on
It’s over over now
When you’re living in the song
It’s over over over now
Coughing thru the haze
Crave a difference
We all crave a difference
And some will never fit in
Beautiful in spite of it all
Chasing answers
We’re all chasing answers
Careful not to hang up your call
Smoke in your face
It clouds your eyes
Smoke in your dreams
It’s every night
Are you living loud?
Do you feel that you are living proud?
Smoke in your face
It clouds your eyes
Smoke in your dreams
It’s every night
Are you living loud?
Do you feel that you are living proud?
It’s starting now
I see starlight in your eyes
It’s starting starting now
Dancing very quiet
It's starting starting starting now
Moving to the radio
It’s starting now
And I know you’ll love the fight
Holding your hairbrush proud
Singing thru the mic
You’re dreaming of your dream to dream up such a crowd
Crave a difference
We all crave a difference
And some will never fit in
Beautiful in spite of it all
Chasing answers
We’re all chasing answers
Careful not to hang up your call
Smoke in your face
It clouds your eyes
Smoke in your dreams
It’s every night
Are you living loud?
Do you feel that you are living proud?
Smoke in your face
It clouds your eyes
Smoke in your dreams
It’s every night
Are you living loud?
Do you feel that you are living proud?
Tonight
And you hurt
And you cry
And you forget the reasons why
It has taken off
Were you happier before the fire?
Smoke in your face
It clouds your eyes
Smoke in your dreams
It’s every night
Are you living loud?
Do you feel that you are living proud?
Smoke in your face
It clouds your eyes
Smoke in your dreams
It’s every night
Are you living loud?
Do you feel that you are living proud?
Tonight
